Borussia Dortmund stalwart Marco Reus is set to depart the club as a free agent at the conclusion of the season.

Breaking news! After 12 incredible years, Borussia Dortmund legend Marco Reus has just revealed on social media that he’ll be leaving the club as a free agent this summer.

In a heartfelt announcement on Friday, Borussia Dortmund’s dynamic midfielder Marco Reus disclosed that he would be parting ways with the club at the season’s end, following a mutual decision not to renew his contract. Having joined Dortmund in 2012 and previously spending a decade with the club as a youth player, Reus leaves behind a legacy of 168 goals in 424 matches.

Revered for his skill, scoring prowess, and strategic play, Reus served as the team’s captain for five illustrious years until 2023. Despite securing two German Cups during his tenure, he narrowly missed clinching his first Bundesliga title last season on the final matchday. However, with Dortmund currently in the Champions League semifinals after a 1-0 victory over Paris St Germain in the first leg, Reus remains hopeful of concluding his final season with the ultimate European club title.

“The club and I decided not to extend the contract,” Reus conveyed in a heartfelt video statement. “I have spent more than half my life at this club. I am proud and happy to have played for so many years here. I am at a loss for words. It is important to let you, the fans, know first, and because we still have a big goal. We want to go to Wembley (for the final) and bring the trophy back to Dortmund.”

Dortmund is set to face off against Paris St Germain in the return leg on Tuesday, aiming to secure a spot in the final for the first time since 2013, with their last Champions League triumph dating back to 1997.
